PELVIC HEALTH

Bladder & pelvic-floor health

Leakage, urgency and discomfort are valid reasons to ask for help.

Start with the right assessment

Urinary incontinence means passing urine unintentionally. Leakage with coughing or exercise differs from a sudden urge that is difficult to control. An assessment helps identify the type and the appropriate care.

A procedure is not the only conversation

Ask about non-surgical treatment, including appropriate pelvic-floor rehabilitation and bladder training. Medication or procedures may be discussed depending on your diagnosis.

Preparing for a visit

Note when leakage or urgency happens, your medicines and any prior pelvic surgery. Ask whether urine testing or other investigations are needed and whether a gynecologist or urologist best fits your concern.

Arrange continuity

Discuss follow-up, activity restrictions and a contact plan before any procedure. Do not assume a treatment advertised for one type of leakage works for all types.

THE DECISION THAT MATTERS

The type of leakage matters. A treatment for leakage on coughing may not address urgency or recurrent bladder symptoms.

Options to discuss with a clinician

Pelvic-floor rehabilitation

Supervised pelvic-floor muscle training is a non-surgical option for stress or mixed incontinence. Ask for assessment and instruction rather than an unsupervised exercise package.

Bladder training and medicines

Urgency-related symptoms may be addressed with bladder training and, when appropriate, medicines.

Procedures

Surgery may be considered for selected patients. Ask which diagnosis it treats, what alternatives have been tried and what complications or further treatment may occur.

Questions specific to this concern

  • Is this stress, urgency or mixed incontinence, or could another condition explain it?
  • Would a bladder diary or urine testing change the plan?
  • Is supervised rehabilitation available before a procedure is considered?
  • If a device or implant is proposed, what exactly is used and how are complications managed?

What to bring

Record when you pass urine, urgency, leakage triggers and how often pads are needed. Bring urine-test results, prior pelvic operations and details of medicines or exercises already tried.

Plan the care after your appointment

Ask about catheter use if relevant, activity restrictions, review appointments and a contact route for difficulty passing urine or other unexpected symptoms. A follow-up plan should identify who can examine you after you return home.
